Why Sagebrush Days?

This is the 27th year of the San Miguel Sagebrush Days Parade and Peddlers Faire. In the 5 years in which the San Miguel Chamber of Commerce has played host, we have seen a wide variety of participation in this event. Groups as diverse as Lillian Larsen School's PTO, the Vaqueros Equestrian Riding Group, the Sheriffs’ Posse and the Model A Club as well as the San Miguel Volunteer Fire-fighters, San Miguel Lion's Club and The Sons and Daughters of the Golden West will hold forth this year along with other individuals and organizations.

The event's origins stem from interest in developing a community event with historically significant context. Under the leadership of Allan Belden, with the assistance of the Lions Club and the community of San Miguel, this concept was formed and these individuals and organizations have consistently played a part in maintaining it every April over the course of the years.

Though coordinated by the San Miguel Chamber (which essentially makes them both host and sponsor) through the San Miguel Parade Committee, other sponsors supporting Sagebrush Days this year include the San Miguel Garbage Company and San Marcos Creek Winery.

San Miguel's origins have important historical implications that underscore the purpose for this event. Our Mission, San Miguel Arcangel, which was established in 1797 and its presence as a National Historical Treasure (the existence still of the actual frescos that regale the interior of its functioning church-- a remarkable maintenance of original artistic devotion) make it a sublime place to visit. The art itself was completed by Salinan Indians, native to this area of San Luis Obispo County. Additionally, another western historic site, the Rios Caledonia Adobe, has been carefully maintained and curated. It represents another important feature of the story of old San Miguel. Also, an early Mill, used to grind the wheat that was exported from San Miguel in the 1800's still exists on Mission Street.

These and other features specific to San Miguel offer plenty of reasons for visiting our community.

While here one may sample the great Mexican cuisine of Dos Hermanos on 10th Street and Tacos Mafia on 14th. Leo's Cafe is also on 10th Street and has built a reputation for delicious breakfast, lunch and dinners of American fare. The Elkhorn Bar on Mission Street is considered to be the 2nd oldest bar in California and the San Miguel Mercantile offers varieties of antiques and collectibles among its other items. Also, the Pleasant Valley Wine Trail offers visitors plenty of opportunities to sample wonderful, high quality regional wines.

Thank you for a great Mixer!

The SMCC hosted a great Mixer at the Military Museum at Camp Roberts on March 7th. About 20 people attended, interacted in lots of military professional Q/A and witnessed the incredible number of artifacts that are carefully maintained by the curator, Gary McMasters. Food (provided by the SMCC Board members) and wine (generously supplied by San Marcos Creek Winery). This was a very dynamic and informative mixer.

Look forward to our next Mixer in June at the Vines RV Resort and in July with the 4North County Chamber Mixer in Templeton. More information about dates and times of mixers and the May Car Show will be announced as we draw closer to the actual event.








The Mission Street Benches Get a Much Needed Tending To

Special Thanks goes out to the Ranchita Canyon 4H Club children who donated their time on Sunday, March 19th to help sand and oil the benches on Mission Street in San Miguel. We want to recognize Kaitlyn Hebrard, Reagan Glenn, Briley Bowen, Bella Bowen and Bennett Cavalletto and their parents who showed up at The San Miguel Mercantile bright and early in the morning to take care of this very needed assignment.

Two Exciting Announcements from Member Org Big Brothers Big Sisters of SLO!

We are excited to announce that member organization, Big Brothers Big Sisters of SLO, has received some well deserved recognition recently with the National Agency of the Year Award! BBBS SLO was one of six agencies recognized during the 2016 National Conference Gala held in Orlando, Florida in late June. Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Luis Obispo County was recognized as Agency of the Year in the Small to Mid-sized agency alliance category for building strategy that led to diversified funding and low employee turnover helping to provide the best leadership for their community.

Board President Christie Clemons said, “It’s wonderful to be recognized as best in the nation! But this award, and the life-changing work we do, wouldn’t be possible at all without on-going support from so many individuals and local businesses throughout San Luis Obispo County. The real congratulations go not just to us, but to every one of our volunteers and donors. I also want to add that we are very fortunate to have an exceptional staff that is proactive, hardworking and thorough. They are an extremely dedicated team!”

“These agencies and boards show extraordinary leadership and have huge impacts in the communities they serve,” said Pam Iorio, President and CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America. 6th Annual Car Show and Cruise Night - May 27th and 28th, 2016

The San Miguel Chamber of Commerce will host the 6th Annual Memorial Day Weekend Car Show and Shine and Cruise Night on Mission Street on May 27th and 28th ! With Vendors, food, music and fun for the whole family!

The event begins Friday, the 27 th with Cruise Night from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. On Saturday the Car Show and Shine will start at 9 AM and end by 3 pm. We are excited for the upcoming 25th Annual (that is a quarter of a century!) San Miguel Christmas Lights Parade and Crafts Faire!


Join us for a fun evening of family activities, Chili Cookoff, craft and other vendors and more just for starters!  Then after the sun goes down, grab your blanket and curl up with a cup of cheer from one of our local business or vendors to watch the charming Christmas Lights Parade.

We are still accepting applications for vendors and parade entries up until 4pm Thursday, so join us!  Get all the info for this event, including downloadable applications here!
